Healthcare Support 5M4339

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the student with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to operate as an efficient healthcare assistant that will support best practice. 

The programme is suitable for school-leavers and for experienced mature persons seeking a formal qualification.

We have been delivering QQI training programmes since 2006 leading to major awards in QQI  Level 5 Healthcare Support  and have trained over 1000 students for the Healthcare Industry.

Our core training is to the Healthcare Sector for the student seeking employment in this area.  We also provide support to those Students choosing to progress to further Education and/or Third Level.

We provide a very important Education and Training service to our community  with programmes that give students  learning opportunities that are accessible, applicable and meet their diverse needs and abilities . B & B Nursing  offers progression routes into further Education, Training and/or Employment that may not have been accessible to them previously.  The employment statistics of our students clearly shows the need and success of these programmes; In 2015 we had 80 students on the Healthcare Support programme, 71 of whom are now working in the healthcare sector with a further 4 progressing to higher education. Most of our students secure employment as care assistants in private nursing homes, with care agencies or in public nursing homes or hospitals.

Our director / owner have vast experience in the healthcare field, both in Ireland and the United States.

She was the director of a Nursing Agency that was accredited by: Federal and State Government, Medicare / Medicaid (HSE equivalent) JCAHO (Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) responsible for providing care to a large diverse community.

A subsidiary of this company was a Training School for Health Aides (Care Assistants) and Nursing Assistants .She was responsible for writing training programme, policies and procedures and getting same accredited.

All of the modules which comprise our programme are aligned to the requirement of the Healthcare Industry and the needs of our learners in respect of securing and retaining employment in this sector and progressing to further education. 

Upon successful completion of this programme, students may progress to employment within a health services environment for example:

Nursing Home,Hospital, Rehabilitation Centre, Psychiatric Hospital, Intellectual Disability Centre,Hospices,  Home Care, Day Care Centre.

Garda vetting will be required for this programme.

Care Skills 5N2770

The unit of study will provide the student with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to participate in the work place setting while carrying out work-related tasks in a supervisory capacity under the direction of a senior line manager who will certify competence prior to under taking supervisory management skills independently. This period will facilitate Students to reflect upon the changing nature of work, while developing their professional competence in a supervisory role.

The purpose of this module is to equip the student with the knowledge, skill and competence to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. Study the physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual needs of a range of people and gain the skills and knowledge to understand the levels of assistance to  meet the needs of particular clients. Enhance the privacy, dignity and independence for the client and gain an understanding  of how effective interpersonal  and communication skills will enable them to improve the Quality of Life for their clients. Students will practice 40 procedures that will give them the necessary skills to provide Quality Care.

Care Support 5N0758

The purpose of this module is to equip the student with the knowledge, skill and competence to work effectively in a care setting. It aims to promote good practice and respect for diversity in lifestyle, religion and culture in care work. Students will be facilitated to explore the roles, responsibilities and entitlements of a care worker and to gain an understanding of the importance of multidisciplinary work in the care sector. Specifically this modules focuses on promoting dignity , privacy , respect , independence for the client. Effective communication , the methods used to communicate , how attitude affects the envirnoment we work in is explored indepth. Provision is made  for the student to  demonstrate an ability to plan and provide enhanced quality of care, understand the individuality of the client and  to explore the need for personal planning and growth.

Safety & Health at Work 5N1794

The safe application of health & safety practice at work and have knowledge of the  core skills provision in health & safety is a priority aim of this module. The student will be introduced to the practical application of Health & Safety Practice in the workplace.Focus will be on  providing  the student  with the knowledge, skills  and competencies, to promote and maintain a safe work environment. Students will develop an understanding of the necessity for safe codes of practice at work and familiarise themselves with current up to date health & safety legislation in Ireland. Students will explore the consequences of non – compliance with health and safety, legislation, policies, regulations and requirements in the work place.

Infection Prevention and Control 5N3734 ( Mandatory HSE & HIQA)

This  module aims to equip the student with the knowledge, skill and competence to prevent and control infection within the health services area. Students  will  study and understand what the area of Infection Control means and its importance for every member of the Healthcare team . Focus is on The Chain of Infection ,the basic principles of infection control and for the student to have the skills and knowledge to apply precautions in relation to infection control in providing a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. Hand  Hygiene , wearing PPE ( Personal Protective Equipmet: Gloves , aprons , goggles .etc) promoting and maintaining a clean environment  is studied and  practiced in this module.

Communications - 5N0690

This  module aims to equip the student with the relevant knowledge, skills  and competence to communicate verbally and nonverbally in standard everyday tasks and in work-related tasks with patients/service users, their families and members of the healthcare team in the workplace. Explore the central role of effective communication in the provision of safe, quality care and develop their communication skills to work effectively with patients/service users, their families and members of the healthcare  team. Explore the use of modern information and communications technology (ICT), within the healthcare setting and the controls in place to ensure its appropriate use and develop an awareness of the essential role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.Students will gain an understanding  of the importance of being aware of how body language can effect how they are perceived .

Work Experience 5N1356

The aim of this module is to equip students with the skills, knowledge and competencies to prepare for and participate effectively in a Heathcare /Nursing environment  under supervision. It will  help students plan and prepare for the work placement and for employment generally , to develop a critical awareness of the changing nature of work .Students will study how effective planning and organisation will enable them to gain an enviable reputation in the workplace.They will  study a comprehensive range of relevant and current legislation and develop the ability  and skills to apply best practice in a work/vocational environment. This module will increase students’ workplace skills and  expand the range of employment opportunities  and increase students capacity and confidence when job seeking .

Care of the Older Person 5N2706

The aim of this module is to facilitate the student to have the knowledge, skills and competency to provide the full range of needs i.e. holistic care for older people in a variety of care settings working under the direction and supervision of nursing staff.Enable the student to acquire the skills to meet the needs of the older person and gain an understanding  regarding the role of the healthcare assistant in promoting a positive attitude to ageing , death and dying and  to take a proactive role in health promotion. Students will research and study the range of services available to older people in Ireland , their role and responsibility regarding Abuse and Neglect of the Older Person.

Palliative Care Support 5N3769

The aim of this module  is to provide the student with the knowledge, skills and competency to deliver care to a person who is dying or has a life limiting diagnosis and their family in a holistic way ensuring dignity and privacy and  enable them to understand the philosophy and principles of Palliative Care. Students will be facilitated to develop a better understanding of the needs of the person  and being competent to meet the needs in a timely manner, to communicate and work effectively with the person with a life limiting illness and the members of the multidisciplinary care team.
