Overview

This comprehensive 120-credit Major Award, consisting of 8 minor components, equips learners to effectively support individuals with intellectual disabilities. It emphasises both independent and supervised best practices and lays a foundation for further education and training in healthcare.

The course is designed to develop the understanding and practical skills required to work with people affected by intellectual disabilities, their families, and support services. You will study the causes, range, and impacts of intellectual disabilities, while promoting awareness of social support models and professional roles in this sector.

  • Duration: About 12 months, with Synchronised Learning (online via Zoom and classroom delivery).

Admission Requirements:

  • Educational Prerequisites: Leaving Certificate, Level 4 Certificate, or equivalent in a relevant subject area is required.
  • Garda Vetting: Mandatory for all healthcare placements. Applicants must undergo Garda Vetting, and international vetting may be necessary for those who have lived outside Ireland for 6 months or more.
  • English Language Proficiency: Applicants should demonstrate a proficiency level in the English language equivalent to CEFR B2+ to effectively engage with course materials, which are delivered in English.
